Sandy Moser is an international, award winning artist who is inspired to paint the wild creatures of the world. She is a self-taught artist but has taken many workshops. She has studied with world renowned artists Zoltan Szabo and Cheng- Khee Chee. She has studied wildlife art through a course from North Light Art School. She has attended many workshops in watercolors, egg tempera and acrylics. Sandy has also studied wildlife art with artists Ron Decker and Derek Wicks. Her recent realistic paintings of wildlife are painted in acrylics with many glazes, but she also paints animals in gouache, pastels, scratchboard, watercolor and on silk.
The beauty of Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada has been the inspiration for many of Sandy’s seacapes, landscapes and wildlife paintings. The ocean and lakes provide her with many images from which to paint. Taylor Head Park and Sober Island Headland are special places where she likes to hike and photograph images that are used for references for her paintings.
Since living along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, she has had the opportunity to study and photograph many species of birds, in particular, the common loon, with her husband Robert. They photograph the loons from their canoe. She says, “It is so awesome to be able to paddle alongside a mother loon and watch her feed her babies and teach them how to dive. These are the things I want to capture in a painting, a moment in time; a gaze of an eye, a particular stance, or a realistic look of an animal or bird”.
Sandy has been painting endangered species for several years, as well as animals that are indigenous to Canada. She says “I feel compelled to paint endangered species. This may show the importance of looking after our environment which in turn may help to save the habitats of these endangered species.”
Sandy has won over 100 international awards, of which seven have been “Best of Show”. Her latest accolade was to win first place in the J Mane “Fins, Fur and Feathers” competition with her owl painting “I’m Looking at You”. In January 2019 her painting “Momma’s Treasures” won first place in the “Animals” Art Exhibition for the Art Room Online Gallery.
Many of her paintings have been featured in various newspapers, websites and publications. Her work has been shown on the following online galleries – Still Point Gallery, My Art Contest, Light, Space & Time Gallery, Raebec Gallery, Richeson Gallery, Leading Artists Gallery, Fusion Art and Art Room Gallery.
Several of her paintings have been published in two of the Richeson 75 Animals, Birds, and Wildlife books. In May 2014, Sandy was a featured artist in the Visual Language Magazine. In February 2015 her painting “Friends of Taylor Head” was published the in the book AcrylicWorks2 –Radical Breakthroughs. Also, in 2016 she was a featured artist in the Truro Daily News regarding the “Fins, Fur and Feathers Show” at Visual Voice Gallery in Truro. The Eastern Shore Cooperator featured Sandy and her husband Robert in their March, 2019 issue.
Sandy’s work has been featured in many selected group shows within the province of Nova Scotia and she continues to show her work at various shops and galleries. Two of her paintings of the Eastern Shore are part of the collection at Province House in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
She is currently a member of the Artisans of the Eastern Shore and was the founding president of the Seacoast Trail Arts Association. Sandy’s paintings are now in private collections in many parts of Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Switzerland, England, Iceland and Germany.
Sandy is represented by Visual Voice Fine Art Gallery, Truro, NS., http://www.visual-voice.ca/fineart/about.html,. Eastern Shores Gallery, East Chezzetcook, NS, and Made in the Sticks Gift Shop, Margaree Centre, Cape Breton, Facebook/Made in the Sticks.

Artist Statement
Painting is entirely for my pleasure and fulfillment. I am driven to create images on canvas and paper. It is something that I cannot stop. It is like breathing – it is a required part of my existence. It’s who I am and it is part of my soul. To be able to create a story, an action, an image, is a wonderful passion to have. When the brush goes into my hand, something takes over and I am lost in the creative process. I want to capture a moment in time; a remembrance for history’s sake of endangered and vulnerable species of the world.
I hope that my realistic style captures the essence of these animals and birds. I have had the opportunity to study and photograph many species of birds and animals, in the wild and at zoos and nature preserves. The dominant theme in my paintings is the relationship between the environment and the animal and the bond between mother and baby. Raising babies in the wild is a challenging job. The young ones of any species face a tenuous existence and realistically may not live out the year.
Through my paintings, I want the viewer to be able to appreciate the scenery and habitat and the beauty of these creatures. Perhaps then, they will understand how important it is that each of us must do our part to try to preserve the environment especially for their habitat. I believe that each individual has a responsibility to co-exist on this planet in a way that respects and protects wildlife and their surroundings. Being a wildlife artist allows me to give back and donate money, prints and original paintings to various causes, in particular “Hope For Wildlife” and “The Nova Scotia Nature Trust”.
